Thomistic Anthropology & the Baars-Terruwe Model: Clinical use and interventions for Catholic psychotherapy:

This clinical presentation is a brief overview of the Baars-Terruwe Model that therapists can utilize to build upon the anthropology of St. Thomas Aquinas in their clinical work. Understanding and communicating Aquinas’ view of the role of the emotions in supporting reason and will towards the choice of the good is a touchstone for clients who distrust their emotions and feelings for one reason or another. Development of affectivity, or the capacity to be moved by the emotions of love, desire and joy, provides a way to promote integration of intellect and will with the emotions. Aiding clients to develop their emotional life through cultivating affectivity overcomes the objection that one must always use one’s willpower to do what is right– which can make Christian life seem an obligation and a drudgery. This model promotes the growth of the emotional life so that life becomes more effortless and joyful.

Healing the Unaffirmed: Clinical Considerations for Treatment of Emotional Deprivation Disorder

This presentation will provide an introduction to Emotional Deprivation Disorder (EDD) developed by Dr Anna Terruwe and Dr Conrad Baars, psychiatrists who integrated the anthropology of Thomas Aquinas with modern psychology. The presenter will define and discuss this disorder and explain its presentation and how it affects the individual. Along with a description of affirming approaches that foster a sense of identity, self -acceptance, self -worth and emotional development, this presentation will provide those who are new to this content insights in helping others to accept their emotional life and the capacity to be moved affectively by others.

The Baars-Terruwe Model of Affirmation Therapy and Thomistic Anthropology: Further clinical applications

Using the Baars-Terruwe Model, St. Thomas Aquinas’ understanding of the role of the emotions helps clients to no longer repress and aids those who, due to emotional deprivation, have not sufficiently developed the breadth of their emotional life. Through the therapist’s affirmation, emotional growth may occur in a natural manner, thereby supporting the person’s willpower and facilitating a better ability to make decisions more readily. This process fosters greater self-confidence, opens the person to a sense of his or her authentic identity, and thereby lessens anxiety and depression.
