My professional career has been devoted to helping people find their way through the challenges, losses, and crises of life. It seems the practice of psychology has too often focused on what’s wrong, assigning diagnoses to our behaviors, reactions, and even the emotions we experience when trying to deal with these struggles.
Over the three decades of my work as a Marriage and Family Therapist I have always looked much deeper than the symptoms to first understand a person’s inner world. And I do this with sensitivity, patience, and respect for the individual. Though I have treated hundreds of individuals and couples through the years and have multiple degrees in both Theology and Psychology, I always treat the person in front of me as unique and I want to understand the struggle from their perspective.
My practice is informed by reason, empirical science, and Christian faith. By drawing upon all three realms of knowledge I can much better understand the human condition and the world of relationships. To that end I have found the model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, known as Internal Family Systems (IFS) to be most aligned with my view of humanness from historical Christianity. In working with couples, I build on the foundational work of both Dr. John Gottman, Gottman Method, and Dr. Sue Johnson, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT).
If you or someone you know is going through one of those difficult seasons of life and you’d like to speak to a caring professional about whether counseling could be of help, I encourage you to call, email, or send me a brief contact message. We can plan a time to talk about your situation, answer your questions, and determine the best path going forward.
