CCPI Level 2: Module One: Catholic Anthropology: insights and applications to psychotherapy

Description:

This workshop will describe and explain several key areas of the Catholic understanding of the human person that are particularly relevant to psychotherapy.  Specifically, the morning session will cover the unity of body and soul, the holistic nature of sexuality, the person as substance in relation, and the human as the image of God. The afternoon session will focus on clinical applications. After an overview of important biological aspects of mental health, substance/relation will be clinically explored using primarily an intersubjective self psychology framework, though also including mentalization and several other models. Case studies will be included.

Content Learning Level:  Intermediate

Learning Objectives:

1. Explain the importance of body/soul unity and the problems resulting from dualism.  

2. List and briefly describe at least ten ways in which our bodily existence affects mental health, and some ways in which that can inform our clinical work.

3. Describe substance and relations as the philosophical foundations of human existence, and the ways in which those govern our psychological/emotional lives, particularly according to a Self Psychology framework.

4. Describe the problem of hyperreflexivity, its relationship to mental illness, and the ways in which therapy can address it (or, conversely, exacerbate it).
