This presentation will provide an overview of the moral dimension of the human person as understood from a Catholic perspective. The Thomistic theological understanding of nature and grace, Natural, Divine, & Eternal Law, development in human freedom, and beatitude will be discussed in light of their relevance for a Catholic anthropology and human development. The presentation will discuss and clarify common misconceptions about human and supernatural goods, human freedom, and Catholic morality. Finally, clinical applications both in case conceptualization and intervention will be discussed in light of this anthropology and growing attention to virtue development in recent research.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the relationship between nature and grace from a Catholic perspective, including identifying examples of how grace builds on nature and how nature is a principle of continuity between the natural order and the supernatural order.

  2. Discuss the relationship between natural, divine, and eternal law and their bearing on order, goodness, and human flourishing. 

  3. Explain a Thomistic view of human freedom and contrast with other perspectives on freedom (e.g. determinism, absolute freedom, etc.). 

  4. Describe the relationship between virtue and beatitude. 

  5. Identify clinical applications whether through case conceptualization or specific interventions that attend to increasing a patient’s freedom and development in line with human nature.

Dr. Orellana is a licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Training in the Doctorate in Psychology program. She received her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Institute for the Psychological Sciences in 2017. She completed an APA accredited pre-doctoral internship through the Nebraska Internship Consortium in Professional Psychology, where she pursued a dual focus in adult group therapy and individual therapy for adults who experienced chronic childhood abuse. Dr. Orellana completed an APA accredited post-doctoral residency at the Togus VA in Augusta, Maine, where she specialized in the treatment of combat and childhood trauma. Professional interests include the psychological and spiritual impact of trauma, psychodynamic and interpersonal theories, the supervision and training of graduate students, and the integration of a Catholic vision of the person with psychology, particularly through case formulation.

Cajetan Cuddy, O.P., Ph.D., S.T.D., is Assistant Professor of Dogmatic and Moral Theology at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. He serves as the general editor the Encylopedia of Catholic Theology (www.ect.org) as well as general editor of the “Thomist Tradition Book Series." He has written for numerous academic and popular publications on the philosophy and theology of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Thomist Tradition.
