This presentation will explore the evolving landscape of the modern dating scene and the unique difficulties faced by Catholic young adults. It will delve into findings from contemporary research on dating, including recent trends, differences between men and women, and relationship formation through in-person vs digital means. The presentation will provide specific implications for mental health providers working with Catholic young adults, including discerning a relationship, navigating the psychological distress of unwanted singleness, potential ethical dilemmas in dating, and various expectations based on age. A cursory review of dating apps and services utilized by Catholic young adults will be discussed.

Mario Sacasa is a licensed marriage and family therapist and operates a private counseling practice in Charlotte, NC. He earned a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision from the University of Holy Cross in New Orleans, LA. He also holds a combined M.S./ Ed.S. in marriage and family counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is also licensed and able to provide telehealth counseling in Louisiana and Florida.
In addition to his counseling work, Dr. Sacasa travels the country offering lectures to dioceses, parishes, seminaries, and college campuses on the themes of marriage, dating, sexuality, hope, and positive psychology. The focus of his career is finding the points of integration between the Catholic-Christian faith and sound counseling practices. This integrated perspective informs all his professional endeavors. He has been on faculty at Notre Dame Seminary, Divine Mercy University, and the Institute for Priestly Formation. He has lectured for the Theology of the Body Institute, The National Catholic Singles Conference, Legatus, and Young Catholic Professionals. His work has been featured on the Simply Catholic website, Lust is Boring Podcast, Ask Fr. Josh Podcast, Being Human Podcast, and The Gloria Purvis Podcast. He is active on his social media platforms and regularly contributes to the blog at faithandmarriage.org.
Dr. Sacasa creates and hosts the Always Hope Podcast, a long-form interview show aimed at helping the listener grow in their emotional and spiritual health. The show has a worldwide audience and he has interviewed notable guests such as Fr. Josh Johnson, Fr. For leisure, Dr. Sacasa is an avid runner and hiker. His heart comes alive exploring mountains and national parks with his family. He watches way too many movies and spends way too much time thinking and talking about them with his kids.
