Description

Target Audience: Students, Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists.

Course Level: Beginner

Learning Objectives:

  • List three elements of Jesus-Centering in Schema Therapy.
  • Identify 3 ways Jesus-Centered Guided Imagery may be a more resonant & effective choice with a Christian client as compared to using the therapist alone or popular secular Schema Therapy images.
  • Analyze how a virtue-based Theology of the body can change the emotional connection between spouses as compared to their current implementation of Theology of the body.

Presentation addresses the special population of Judeo-Christian clients whose needs often require sensitivity to their culture & religion and with whom there are manifested particular patterns of emotional disorders.   It involves an overview of centering psychotherapy on Jesus, and the robustness of Schema Therapy to contain a Catholic Christian & Judeo anthropology and set of interventions.  JC-ST is not a stand-alone therapy, but an application of standard Schema Therapy according to the values and beliefs of primarily the Christian-client population. Clinical vignettes illustrate the alignment of the Theology of the Body with development of specific Christian virtues. These develop in the context of personal growth & schema healing and are integrated within the entire client conceptualization.  Such conceptualization encompasses presenting problems with their roots in schema traps and mode origins together with their concomitant marital cycles.  Jesus-Centered Chair dialogues, guided imagery and Lectio Divina encounter with Scripture interventions are described.

Dr. Chiara is very active in the Catholic Psychotherapy Association. She has respect for clients coming from differing religious persuasions, incorporating meaning in life and positive examples into their quest for Healthy Adult mode functioning.  For Christian clients, she specializes in Jesus-Centered Schema Therapy, a Culturally Competent Therapy for Christians, which invites Jesus into the sessions through His Model, Lectio Divina with His Word and in guided imagery to provide healing, direction, formation and reconciliation.  This also involves trauma work and healing of schema/lifetrap patterns. She sees the triadic integration of Spirit/Soul, mind/reason and emotions/body as promoting the most effective human flourishing.  Besides seeing individual clients, she has a special focus on couples marital healing and trauma affecting couples.

Her Simeone-DiFrancesco Schema Therapy International Training Center with Couples   trains and certifies therapists in a number of venues:  CULTURALLY COMPETENT SCHEMA THERAPY WITH COUPLES FOR CHRISTIANS; JESUS-CENTERED TRAINING FOR THERAPISTS, & SCRIPTURAL PASTORAL FOUNDATIONS.

In another area of focus, Dr. Simeone-DiFrancesco is the CEO of Jesus-Centered Institute, LLC & Dialog International Press, LLC, where she is very involved in the production of Catholic spiritual podcasts, evangelizing materials and videos, and the publication of books.
