Description

Integrating Body and Soul: Principles for a Catholic Approach to Gender Identity
This panel will explore the nature of the human person and the sexual difference as well as the clinical phenomenon of incongruence between bodily sex and psychological gender identity from theological, philosophical, scientific, and clinical perspectives. Selner-Wright will provide principles from the Catholic view of the human person, such as a soul-body unity, contrast this view with key points from the dominant secular view, and explore implications for the treatment of gender dysphoria.  Sodergren will present scientific findings regarding sexual differentiation and gender incongruence and will discuss principles for treatment of gender dysphoria integrating principles from Selner-Wright’s presentation, clinical literature, research studies, and ethical and legal considerations.

Becoming Man and Woman: Theology, Psychology, and Healing of Sexual Identity
This presentation will provide a sound theological and psychological understanding of the sexual difference (male and female) and a thorough review of the literature on psychotherapeutic approaches to working with gender dysphoria. The first part will lay the foundation by reviewing Catholic teaching on the sexual difference with special emphasis on the work of Pope St. John Paul II. Next, an extensive review of the scientific literature on sex differences will be provided. A developmental approach to understanding male and female will be taken that incorporates key findings from biological, psychological, and neuroscientific studies. Following upon this solid theological and psychological foundation, the second part will review the extent professional literature on psychotherapeutic responses to gender dysphoria. Clinical observations, theory, and case studies will be reviewed spanning psychodynamic, behavioral, and integrative approaches. The testimony of and research on detransitioners will also be reviewed. Recommendations for therapy will be provided.

A Developmental-Exploratory Approach to Adolescent Sexual Identity from a Catholic Perspective
The presentation will review adolescent sexual identity from a developmental framework and discuss the utility of an exploratory approach to sexual identity issues. These issues could include same-sex attraction, gender-questioning, gender dysphoria, and transgender experiences. It is common for adolescents to explore their identity and sexuality. Adolescents often feel ill-at-ease in their bodies or do not feel a sense of belonging in their same-sex peer groups as they navigate the transitions and awkwardness of puberty. Many adolescents who go through a period of sexual identity confusion find that their gender-questioning naturally resolves as they continue to develop and become more confident in their identity. All too often, gender-affirming approaches to treating gender dysphoria and related concerns do not acknowledge the reality that sexual identity is a developmental process. When these concerns emerge in a therapeutic context, it is fruitful to take a developmental approach and have the skills to explore these experiences appropriately. This approach can prevent adolescents from jumping too quickly into medical treatments that may prove damaging to their bodies in adulthood.
