This is the first of four independent modules of Level 1 of the CPA's new Certificate in Catholic Psychotherapy Integration (CCPI). Module One focuses on understanding the theology of the human person, exploring the inherent dignity and nature of humanity from a Catholic perspective. Participants will learn to integrate Catholic teachings into clinical practice, offering an introductory framework for applying these principles in therapy. Module One also focuses on shaping the identity of Catholic therapists, emphasizing ethical, spiritual, and professional development. This integration of faith and psychology aims to equip clinicians with tools to better serve clients while remaining faithful to Catholic doctrine and ethical standards.

Dr. Andrew Sodergren is a Catholic psychologist and Director of Psychological Services for Ruah Woods Institute, a Theology of the Body ministry in Cincinnati, OH. He earned his Masters and Doctorate in clinical psychology from Divine Mercy University’s Institute for the Psychological Sciences. He also holds a Masters degree in theology from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family at CUA, where he taught as an Adjunct Professor for 13 years. Dr. Sodergren co-authored a chapter in Gender Ideology and Pastoral Practice: A Handbook for Catholic Clergy, Counselors, and Ministerial Leaders. He previously contributed chapters on the “Psychology of the Sexual Difference” to the book Sexual Identity: The Harmony of Philosophy, Science, and Revelation and on forgiveness in marriage in the book Torn Asunder: Children, the Myth of the Good Divorce, and the Recovery of Origins. He is an active member of the Catholic Psychotherapy Association (CPA) and is a frequent speaker for professional and lay audiences on topics involving the integration of psychology and the Catholic faith. In 2023, he was honored by the CPA with the Our Lady of Good Counsel Clinical Excellence Award. He and his wife Ellie have been married 25 years and have 5 children.
William Nordling, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Psy.D. program in clinical psychology at the Institute for the Psychological Sciences of Divine Mercy University. He teaches coursework in child, marriage, and family. He served on the Board of Directors and as 3rd President of the Catholic Psychotherapy Association. He is a co-editor of the ground-breaking book, A Catholic-Christian Meta-Model of the Person: Integration with Psychology and Mental Health Practice, which serves as a foundation for the curricula of degree programs at DMU and other mental health training programs throughout the world.
Dr. Grundman is Assistant Professor of Integrative Studies in the Psy.D. program in clinical psychology at the Institute for the Psychological Sciences of Divine Mercy University. He teaches courses on the nature of the person, rational moral development, and friendship, marriage, and family life. He co-led the development of the university’s first two online programs and their courses (MS in Psychology, MS in Counseling), as well as its online certificate in Spiritual Direction. These roles provided an opportunity for exposure to a broad range of psychological sciences and principles for clinical practice, as well as for deepening integrative thinking.
Dr. Orellana is a licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Training in the Doctorate in Psychology program. She received her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Institute for the Psychological Sciences in 2017. She completed an APA accredited pre-doctoral internship through the Nebraska Internship Consortium in Professional Psychology, where she pursued a dual focus in adult group therapy and individual therapy for adults who experienced chronic childhood abuse. Dr. Orellana completed an APA accredited post-doctoral residency at the Togus VA in Augusta, Maine, where she specialized in the treatment of combat and childhood trauma. Professional interests include the psychological and spiritual impact of trauma, psychodynamic and interpersonal theories, the supervision and training of graduate students, and the integration of a Catholic vision of the person with psychology, particularly through case formulation.
