Description: Faith is an inner resource that trauma survivors have difficulty accessing due to survival-based nervous system adaptations. Removing obstacles to restoring a felt-sense of safety and connection is vital to lasting recovery and resilience in the face of future stressors. An understanding of the nature of the trauma response (including neurological, developmental, and cognitive-emotional factors) aids case conceptualization, therapeutic alliance, and treatment decision-making. Preparation for trauma processing involves establishing safety in the therapeutic relationship and developing skills in emotional self-regulation. The pros and cons of cognitive processing, in-vivo exposure and EMDR will be outlined to facilitate clinical decision-making.
